Johnny Appleseed Day

We learned that Johnny Appleseed was a real man who treated everyone equally and loved animals.  He walked around bare foot sharing his apple seeds with everyone he met.

We taste tested apples!

The first grade graphed their favorite apples.

We made homemade apple sauce (which tasted like the inside of an apple pie)!

The whole first grade had a fantastic APPLE ADVENTURE DAY!

Math Investigators

Math and Egg Cartons
Each egg carton had numbers at the bottom.  Students shook the carton to have a counter land on a number.  Once they read the number, partners worked together to build a tower to represent that given number.  All groups worked well together and helped each other.

Summer Celebration Sharing Time

We were able to get to know each other a little more and share what we did over the summer.  The students as well as Ms. Lahey really enjoyed our time together.

Welcome Parents to First Grade 2013-2014

Hello All
I hope your children are adjusting well to first grade.  I know it is a big change from kindergarten.  We have been having lots fun and learning tons already!

Friendly Reminders:
-please initial your child's behavior chart every night/look over homework
-P.E. class is every Wednesday: sneakers are needed
-my email is klahey@bcps.org if you need to get ahold of me

Reading:
We have been practicing a lot of routines as well as independent work procedures.  Right now, we are immersed in our shared reading lessons.  These lessons encourage whole group discussions as well as giving students exposure to the common core standards.  As we practice what to do at our literacy centers I am hoping to start guided reading soon.  Students will spend time reading for comprehension and fluency in small groups during this guided reading time.

Math:
Unit 1-How Many of Each-Investigations
Students are reviewing counting as well as making different combinations of numbers.
