My mathematicians solved an addition word
problem independently. After they drew a
picture and wrote a number sentence students were invited up to the board to
explain their work. It is so interesting
hearing their rational behind their thinking!

Daily 5
A big part of our "Language Arts time" is the Daily 5. While small groups meet with Ms. Lahey for guided reading instruction, the rest of the class is partaking in Daily 5. Students have the choice to read to self, read with a buddy, work on writing, word work (phonics practice) and listen to reading (when laptops come in)! The children really love being able to choose what activity they will complete and where around the classroom they can work. I enjoy seeing them actively engaged in their learning.

Phonics
We are reviewing letters and sounds to prepare for blending
words. We are also practicing
handwriting.
Reading
Our class has been working hard with different shared reading
stories such as Chrysanthemum, Wemberly Worried, Hooray for Wodney Wabbit, and
The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Next week
we will be starting unit 1: Exploring Elements of Fiction. This unit concentrates on story elements,
main idea and detail, and comparing/contrasting.
We are also practicing and getting ready to begin daily
5. Daily 5 will take up about an hour of
our reading time. Students will work
with Ms. Lahey in small groups for guided reading. Others will get to choose an activity: read
to self, read to a partner, word work (phonics), writing, or listening to
reading. We are excited about the
arrival of devices (laptops) coming at the end of October. Students will be able to use them as a tool
to access their daily 5 work.
Math
Students have been having a blast exploring math
manipulatives. Unit 1 math is: How many
of each? We will be adding subtracting
and continuing their number sense. So
far we have been working hard at mastering numbers 1-20.
Others
Please check your child’s homework every night
Monday-Thursday. Behavior calendars in
their purple folder should be initialed every night.
Please return all of that “beginning of the year paperwork” to
Ms. Lahey soon! Special thanks, I know
it is a lotJ
