In 1492...

In 1492 Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue!
We learned all about Christopher Columbus.  We found out that he sailed West, looking for India.  What he didn't realize was that he discovered a whole new continent.
We also read details about Christopher Columbus and determined if they were true or false.

How Many Ways to Make 10

Math Investigations
Students worked with partners to play “How many are you hiding?”  Each student had a group of 10 and put some behind them.  Their partner had to determine how many were hidden.  We then discussed how there are many different ways to represent a number.

Math Investigations: Unit 1 "Three Towers"
Partner groups work together to roll dice and create groups of 10.  All 3 towers usually look different but show that the number 10 can be shown many different ways.

Language Arts
Traits that describe characters in the story.

Wembery Worried and Chrysanthemum are both written by Kevin Henkes.  Both stories focus on the characters going to school.  Chrysanthemum was excited to go to school but had a negative experience.  Wemberly was worried about going to school and had a positive experience.  Both characters learned that it was okay to be themselves.  They both felt confident in the end. The students used these stories to make text to self connections.
We read "To Be a Kid".  We learned about children from around the world.  We determined that all children have similarities and differences.  We used post-its to identify these similarities and differences while reading the text together.  Then we used our thoughts and ideas to complete a writing assignment.

Fire Safety Prevention Week

Fire Safety Prevention Week
October 7-13

It is very important to have an escape plan at your house if the fire alarm goes off.  Talk to your children about two different escape routes to use at home.  There is always a chance that one route is blocked by smoke or flames.  It is important to plan and practice fire escapes.
