A Peak at Our Weeks
Phonics:  We have been working on digraphs and long vowel sounds.  We will continue to blend sounds so we can read and write words.
Reading:  We began our PACE unit on change.  We will continue to work in small reading groups to reinforce reading strategies and skills.  With the Holidays quickly approaching I anticipate we will be learning/creating a lot having to do with upcoming events!
Math:  We started Unit 3-Solving Story Problems (it’s a long one).  It includes combinations of numbers, introducing subtraction, working with addition and subtraction, and counting larger amounts.

Awesome Artists

Three of our students, Toby, Evelyn and Grace, were chosen for artist of the week.  Their work is hanging in the hallway.  I am proud of all my wonderful artists in room 30!

Math Unit 3: Solving Story Problems

So far in math we have been working to show many combinations of a given number.  The students worked together to play, How Many Am I Hiding?  The two workshop games consisted of students hiding cubes behind their backs/hiding counters under a cup so their partners could determine the missing piece.
 The girls working together.
 Jaylin showing Caroline the counters.
 Destiny and Aidan working together.
Evelyn hiding connecting cubes behind her back and Lawrence counting to find the missing number.

Pilgrim Party

We learned all about the Pilgrims and their new home in Plymouth, Massachusetts.  We obviously HAD to wear the hats and get ourselves into character.  The students had a lot of funJ

Scholastic News had a great vitual tour and informational site that the students loved, you can check it out at home!

Thankful Turkeys

We read, Thanks for Thanksgiving, and brainstormed what we are thankful for.  The students wrote what they were thankful for on the turkey feathers.  Then they assembled their festive turkeys.

-using the web to help think of ideas

Ava and James are working hard.

Toby: writing down what he is thankful for.

What terrific turkeys!

Mayflower Mayhem

Reading groups learned all about the Pilgrim's voyage on the Mayflower.  We discovered that there were two different groups aboard the ship, the Pilgrims and the "Strangers".  They worked together to form the Mayflower Compact, making laws and rules to live by in the New World.
Their trip was difficult and long, but the Pilgrims were determined.

Adventures with Trekker

Caroline took Trekker to gymnastics.  They also spent time coloring!
Trekker went fishing with James and his Dad.  They caught a lot of fish!
Grace and Trekker spent the weekend with Grace's Mom, Dad and sister.

Asking and Telling Turkeys

After reading a non-fiction text about Turkeys, we then spent our grammar lesson determining if a sentence needed a question mark or a period.

Veteran's Day Love

A Special Thank You To All Our Veterans

We learned about Veteran's, and what this special day means by watching "The Wall".  It is a wonderful book about the Vietnam Memorial wall.

Mrs. Reitz's son-in-law is overseas right now.  We wrote friendly letters to him, practicing both rough drafts and final copies.  The letters will be mailed out soon.
